Norbertine Oblate Louise Nielsen is our Abbey Beekeeper. The Abbey has three hives with two boxes each. A brood box and a food box. Usually the brood is on the bottom with the queen and nurse bees and nectar and honey for the hive is above with the foragers. Soon we will put the supers on top to begin a honey collection. More about that soon! Throughout the year, beekeeper Louise will continually be aware of the colony’s need for stores and the importance of monitoring for pests and diseases. The situation within the hive can change very quickly. Right now Louise does weekly hive checks that focus largely on the queen bee and the queen cells. Does the queen have enough space to lay eggs? Is the colony planning to swarm? Are the workers trying to replace the queen? Stay tuned for more updates on our Abbey honey bees!
